CHAPTER SIXTEEN

DANIEL

A blank calendar. An afternoon clear of any appointments. This was a rarity for him, but he’d put the work in, ensuring he had no commitments this afternoon. Daniel rarely felt anxious about new experiences. He ensured he studied the situation at hand, looked at all the variables, and by the time he was in the situation, he felt comfortable in his own skin.

This afternoon was going to be different, no matter how many variables he looked at. Meeting your potential girlfriend and boyfriend’s friends all at the same time was a humbling undertaking. Hence the clearing of the afternoon appointments.

Today’s get-together was to celebrate the return to land of Mason’s friend Malik. Mari said to him when she was inviting him, “That’s the reason on paper, but we always find a reason to hang out together and make some food.”

Daniel asked them both what he should bring, and Mason said, “I don’t think you cook anything better than the food you’ll find there.” And Mari said, “Don’t listen to him, bring whatever you’re comfortable bringing, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to,” which was no help to him whatsoever. He had settled on bringing wine. He figured he couldn’t go wrong with that.

It was four, so he turned off his electronics and walked out of his office, which gave Daniel plenty of time to get home, get ready, and be at Mariana’s cousin’s house by six.

Someone cleared his throat behind him.

He took his time turning around, already knowing what was coming. Ken stood with a quizzical look on his face, looking down at his watch.

“It’s 4:00 p.m. Son, are you feeling unwell?” Ken asked.

“No, I’m feeling pretty good actually,” he said calmly.

“Since when do you leave the office at four?” Ken asked, his attention now fully on Daniel.

“I usually don’t, as you already know. But I have a personal engagement, therefore I’m departing early today. I’ll see you on Sunday for brunch.” He turned around and started walking, but Ken cleared his throat yet again. The passive aggression didn’t bother him. Ken should switch tactics.

“Yes, Ken?” he asked.

“I don’t think it is wise to be leaving so early when you’re clearly working your way toward taking the reins here. I still feel young, but your mother has compelled me to consider stepping away sooner than I had planned as you’re, in her words, 'ready,’ but this doesn’t show me you’re ready.” Ken gestured to his watch, then to Daniel and his briefcase.

It surprised him to hear that his mom was vouching for him. She rarely, if ever, rocked the boat with Ken, not even for him. Ken’s words and slight chastisement might have been enough in the past for him to feel compelled to stay, but he was slowly moving beyond that .

“I’m glad to hear you’re considering it. I still have a personal engagement today, and I have been in the office since 4:30 a.m. I fulfilled all my appointments and responsibilities. If I’m not mistaken, you arrived at 9:30 a.
